Keynote Speakers
Ludmil Alexandrov
Associate Professor, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, UCSD
Dr. Ludmil Alexandrov is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular
Medicine and the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California San Diego. He is
interested in disentangling the enigmatic secrets hidden in large omics datasets. His research is
focused on developing novel machine-learning approaches and in leveraging these approaches
to elucidate the basic molecular mechanism underlying cancer development and cancer
progression. With this understanding he aims to improve cancer treatment and cancer
prevention.

Igor Jouline
Professor, Department of Microbiology, The Ohio State University
Igor B. Jouline is the Rod Sharp Endowed Professor in the Department of Microbiology and a Co-Director of Computational Health and Life Sciences at The Ohio State University Translational Data Analytics Institute. His research focuses on the evolution of genes, including those implicated in various diseases. The computational evolutionary approaches they develop aim to reveal novel signal transduction features. Understanding the fundamental signaling mechanisms is essential to detecting the aberrant signals in human cells that lead to diseases and identifying the targets for drug design.
ABOUT
The International Symposium on Health Informatics and Bioinformatics (HIBIT), first held in 2005, aims to bring together academics, researchers, and practitioners who work in these popular and fulfilling areas and create the much-needed synergy among medical, biological, and information technology sectors. HIBIT is one of the few conferences emphasizing such synergy. HIBIT provides a forum for discussion, exploration, and development of theoretical and practical aspects of health informatics and bioinformatics and a chance to network between students, academia, and other stakeholders.
